Public Service marked Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations in New Hampshire  Manchester NH October 2, 2005

Twenty volunteers from the Public Service group of the India Association of New Hampshire organized dinner service to serve hot meal to the Manchester homeless at New Horizon Soup kitchen and homeless shelter.  Vandana Dhakar, Membership Committee Chair opened the doors of the soup kitchen at 10:00 AM.

Ravi Datla, Nalini Dayanad, Kanaga Eapahras, Meera Venkatachalam, SriSai Seethamaraju and Suman Seethamaraju, Dr. Kala and Prithvi Kumar joined the cooking team and prepared Vegetable lentil soup and vegetarian ‘Baked Ziti’ for the guests.  The team members prepared ten trays of Ziti and six gallons of lentil soup.  It was sufficient to serve over one hundred and seventy guests.

Barinder Ahluwalia, IANH Public Service Committee Chair joined the group at noon.  Some members of the volunteer team took a break from cooking duties and helped Barinder to pack the materials headed to Alexandria Louisiana to help Katrina victims.  Melanie Kohli, an IANH member organized a drive to collect personal hygiene items and over-the-counter medicines to help the victims.

Ravi Vyapuri, Sarwan Aggarwal, Himanshu and Rishi Desai, Sid Prabhakar, Dr. Venkatachalam, Prasad Dabbi, Raj Jain, and Karthi Chandra joined the team in the afternoon.  Sixteen year old Sid Prabhakar and twelve year old Rishi Desai prepared garlic bread guided by Prasad Dabbi and Himanshu Desai.  The team kept the service counter ready by 4:00 PM.  The bell at the shelter rang at 4:30 PM indicating the dinner was ready for the guests.  The guests enjoyed a happy meal and some even came for the second serving. In the end, there was not a drop of soup or Ziti left.  It was gratifying to spend the day serving the homeless and put into practice Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings.

IANH is well known for its Public Service activities.  Dinner service is one of many activities.

Barinder Ahluwalia,

Chair, IANH Public Service Committee
