January 25, 2004 Presidential Primary Town Hall Meeting

Members of the New Hampshire Indian American community met on Sunday January 25th to hear from various Democratic Presidential campaign representatives. This is the first time such a meeting was held in New Hampshire that attracted over forty participants. The meeting provided information from various campaigns to help the undecided members to make up their mind before the Tuesday’s Primary.

Mr. Prithvi Kumar, Mr. Tej Dhakar, and Mr. Himanshu Desai of IANH coordinated the meeting. The meeting was held at the residence of Mohan and Karthi Chandra. The members of the community took part in open discussions with the campaign representatives. Ms. Mini Timmaraju, Executive Director, New Hampshire Senate Democratic Caucus addressed the audience and served as the moderator. Dr. Vanita Shastri, President, Indian American Forum for Political Education - Massachusetts chapter spoke about the Forum’s plan to host a seminar on guidance to those who seek political office.

Mr. Vijay Batra, Delegate to Democratic National Convention for Gen. Clark, Dr. Ravi Pandit Associate Professor School of Hospitality Southern New Hampshire University representing Sen. Kerry Campaign, Mr. Siddharth Das Delegate to Democratic National Convention for Gov. Dean, and Ms. Madhuri Tallapragada Volunteer at John Edwards Campaign introduced their respective candidates to the audience. Mr. Himanshu Desai gave a brief introduction on Rep. Kucinich’s candidacy. Ms. Timmaraju provided literature from Sen. Lieberman’s campaign.

The members then participated in the open discussions on topics ranging from Gen. Clark’s party switching to effectiveness of Dean and Kerry to voters in November. The event was recorded for television broadcast to audience in India through “Aaj Tak” channel. In summary, the meeting provided a forum for the NH Indian American community to get involved with the political process
